Audio Tour

Flashlight Fish can appear to "blink" by rotating their light organs, causing the light to flicker on and off. They get their name from the half-moon-shaped bioluminescent organs known as photophores below their eyes. These organs contain symbiotic, light-producing bacteria that can glow blue, white, or yellow. The light is enhanced by a reflector located on the back of the organ.
