Adventure Aquarium Is One Of Four Facilities World-Wide To Hold Association Of Zoos And Aquariums Accreditation For 30 Years

Adventure Aquarium remains to keep up with the highest standards of animal care.

Adventure Aquarium started its Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) renewal process in September of 2018 and recently received the AZA-certification for the next five years. Every five years, Association of Zoos and Aquariums facilities go through a rigorous accreditation process that is reviewed by the Accreditation Commission. The process includes meeting AZA standards for animal management and care, including living environments, social groupings, health and nutrition. The Accreditation Commission evaluate the veterinary program, involvement in conservation and research, education programs, safety policies and procedures, security, physical facilities, guest services and the quality of the institution’s staff. For zoos and aquariums, the Accreditation Commission also evaluates the facilities finances, its governing authority and its support organization.

“Adventure Aquarium is among the world-class aquariums and zoos that have achieved our rigorous accreditation standards,” said AZA President and CEO Dan Ashe. “The hundreds of millions of annual guests to AZA-accredited facilities like Adventure Aquarium can be assured they are supporting institutions that provide high-quality animal care and contribute to crucial conservation initiatives.”

Association of Zoos and Aquariums is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of zoos and aquariums in the areas of conservation, animal welfare, education, science and recreation. AZA is the accrediting body for the top zoos and aquariums in the United States and eight other countries. They are widely acknowledged as the ‘gold-standard’ in the zoological profession.

“Adventure Aquarium, along with a very few facilities, have been AZA-accredited for over 25 years,” said Vince Nicoletti, Executive Director and Vice President of Adventure Aquarium. “Every day the Adventure Aquarium team strives to keep the absolute highest standards in animal care and exhibition. It is an honor to hold this certification for this amount of time.”

In order for a facility to be AZA-accredited, the Accreditation Commission evaluates accreditation applications from the world’s best aquariums, nature centers, science centers and zoos.  Adventure Aquarium underwent a thorough review to make certain it has and will continue to meet ever-rising standards in animal welfare and care, veterinary programs, conservation, education and safety. Adventure Aquarium continues to show the highest values in each division and is granted another five years of Association of Zoos and Aquariums Accreditation.
