African Cichlid

Size: 1 inch to 3.3 feet
Habitat/Range: Shallow rivers and lakes in Africa
IUCN Status: Numerous species classified as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered

Cichlids are one of the largest families of fish, with over 1600 described species. New species are discovered annually and scientists estimate there may be as many as 3000 species. Many unique species of cichlid only live in Africa's Lake Victoria. Unforunately, due to invasive species and overfishing, more than half of Lake Victoria's cichlid species are either endangered or extinct.
