On the first #TurtleTuesday of February 2017, Adventure Aquarium announced the name of its rehab and release loggerhead sea turtle hatchling.
The Aquarium welcomed the young sea turtle to the AAQ family at the start of the New Year. During the month of January, Adventure Aquarium asked guests to help select the name of the young turtle at a voting station located in the Main Lobby of the Aquarium. The name options guests chose from were: Darwin, Griswold, Groot and Tina. Using spare change, visitors were able to vote for their favorite name choice.
“We are proud to announce that our 2017 loggerhead hatchling’s name is Darwin,” said Nikki Grandinetti, Curator of Fish and Invertebrates at Adventure Aquarium. “We are also incredibly appreciative of our guests who donated over $400 to help sea turtles in the wild. All sea turtle species are endangered so every penny counts to help with conservation and awareness.”
Guests can now visit the hatchling on exhibit in Sea Turtle Cove, adjacent to Ocean Realm where the Aquarium’s adult sea turtles reside. The young turtle, that hatched last August, will call Adventure Aquarium home for most of the year until it is released into the Gulf Stream off the coast of North Carolina, along with other yearlings from aquariums all over the country, this coming fall.
Each year, Adventure Aquarium welcomes a hatchling from North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores Sea Turtle Program to rehabilitate. Biologists will help guide and train the hatchling to do activities it would normally do in the wild as a sort of “survival school” for sea turtles.
